Monday June 30 there was an amber alert all day. There was an Hispanic men that took a 22 month old. Later on that evening there were about six police cars swarming around my parents house. They live in Genoa City, a small town were nothing really ever happens. My dad and his friends were standing in his garage talking and the police got out their guns and pointed them in his direction. My dad was like, "ok, what is going on, what did we do?" Then the car with the Hispanic man and the little girl drove by. About 6 minutes or so they shot him and sent the little girl to the hospital safely. He was shot right were my brother is berried.
Here is the story...
Two pictures are being painted of Antonio Torres, the man who was shot by deputies after beating his girlfriend and driving off with their daughter.
Torres has a criminal record that includes an incident remarkably similar to Monday's events. His estranged wife Deanna Torres says she feared for her life when Torres beat her and forced her and her two children into his car.
“He told the kids that he was going to kill me, that they would never see me again," Deanna told TODAYS TMJ4 reporter Lauren Leamanczyk.
Torres served prison time in 1998 for beating Deanna and threatening her two children. A kidnapping charge was later dropped.
Deanna says Torres could be a good man, but he had a frightening temper "It was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," she said.
She does not believe Torres' sentence was long enough or that he received enough counseling for his anger.
Meanwhile, Torres' family members in Zion, Illinois refuse to admit that authorities were justified in shooting Torres. They say they think they could have talked him into turning himself in to police.
“Maybe if they would have told us what was going on, maybe we would have had a different outcome," Torres sister, Rachel Abarran, said.
She admits he has a problem with abusing women. But, she insists he'd never hurt his child. "My brother is not a monster," she said. |
